Creative Manifesto (2021 Version)

So here we are in March, and I wanted to wait a little bit to get my thoughts in order before writing out a 'goals' list for this year. Those New Year's resolutions/goals always felt so disappointing by the time we enter the third month, right? I decided to wait and write one after I've had some time to soak this year in. I was inspired to do a manifesto, I've never written one before, so I figured I'd give it a try. Here it goes:

  1. Quality must drive the work. This not only pertains to the final look of the piece, but to its design and function. If it's not good, it's not sellable.

  2. Social media cannot be used for personal validation. Use it as a tool and if that doesn't work, find another way of communicating and getting the word out about your work.

  3. Kill your ego. If the piece is designed for recognition from some external source, then the work will never be enough.

  4. Resist trends, forge your own path.

  5. Make the thing you want to make that day and nothing else. Don't do anything that doesn't come from a place of passion.

  6. Do it by hand.

  7. Don't rush a piece.

  8. Use the materials you have at hand. Be resourceful.

  9. Figure it out.

  10. Do good work. Honor the art.

I think that about sums up what I want to accomplish for the rest of the year. Thanks so much for reading, and I'll catch you in the next blog post.
